My background in interior design and experience with energy programs has led me to be very passionate about building sciences and the role that our environment has on health and human psychology. My professional objective is to create and assist in the development of successful sustainable environments. This broad objective is the result of a wide range of jobs that have shaped my career thus far. I have come to understand the built environment from the ground up – from city planning to the finishing touches of paint on a project – and how everything in between affects the users both daily and long term.
Humans, though we do not like to admit it, are sensitive creatures. We are affected by the smallest details. We are subconsciously annoyed by poor space planning and we derive pleasure from the right combination of paint color and natural daylighting. The chemicals that leech off of our brand new carpets give us mysterious headaches and our HVAC systems most often are the cause of our allergy symptoms. My professional development so far has been focused on removing these barriers to facilitate a productive environment.
This line of thinking drives my passion and the activities I am involved with. I enjoy being engaged in the community and working with people, which has led me to take on a leadership role with the Heart of Michigan Branch, a branch of the United States Green Building council that is focused on the sustainable building. I also currently work on a broad range of projects through Michigan Energy Options, from leading the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification for our demonstration center to organizing, developing and helping to manage grant-funded programs for the 30 year old nonprofit.
